As part of the 1st Sustainable Pedieos Festival… Stream of Life, the Office of the Environment Commissioner and KyklOIKOdromio conducted a survey on visitors' experiences of the Pediaion River - a unique ecosystem in the heart of Nicosia. Data collection began on 1 November during the Opening Ceremony, and the initial findings were presented at the Closing Ceremony by Dr. Athena Georgiou Shippi (Lead, KyklOIKOdromio). The survey aimed to understand visitor needs and preferences, focusing on safety, cleanliness, accessibility, and sustainability of the area.
Preliminary results from 25 participants indicate a generally positive visitor experience, with walking, cycling, and relaxing being particularly popular activities. However, participants highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and cleanliness, suggesting more greenery, better lighting, public toilets, enhanced security, and new recreational facilities. Additionally, concerns were raised about the protection of biodiversity and the preservation of the natural ecosystem. Overall, while the Pedios River positively contributes to the wellbeing of visitors, there is room for further enhancement of the site.
