Participation of KyklOIKOdromio in the Environment Department's Workshop "Don't Give Food to Waste"

On 6th  December 2024, Kykloikodromio participated in an informative workshop organized by the Department of Environment,  Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, as part of the European Week for Waste Prevention. The workshop, held at the Cultural Centre "Melina Mercouri Theatre" in Nicosia, was conducted under the motto "Don't Give Food to Waste."

The event welcomed approximately 80 primary school students from Nicosia, who engaged enthusiastically in the activities, gaining valuable insights into reducing food waste and sustainable waste management.

This year's theme, "Food Waste," underscored the severity of food waste as an issue that harms the environment, depletes valuable resources, and incurs significant economic and social costs. Globally, nearly 1.3 billion tonnes of food are discarded annually, while in the European Union, about 88 million tonnes of food are wasted each year. Key practices to minimize and prevent food waste include:

  1. Plan and shop wisely: Create shopping lists, plan meals, and buy only what you need.
  2. Store food properly: Ensure food is stored in appropriate conditions to prolong its freshness.
  3. Cook the right portions: Prepare meals in quantities that match your actual needs.
  4. Repurpose leftovers: Reuse leftovers in new recipes or save them for future meals.

As part of the workshop, Kykloikodromio organized a variety of creative activities to promote environmental education:

  • Drawing Activity: "Don't Give Food to Waste"
  • Crafting Fruits from Recyclables Demonstrating how recyclable materials can be transformed into creative crafts, reinforcing the concept of waste reduction.
  • "Take One, Give One" : Inspiring students and teachers to bring books from home to exchange, promoting the values of exchange and sharing.

The day provided a unique opportunity for children to understand their role in building a sustainable future. Kykloikodromio extends its gratitude to the Department of Environment for the invitation and remains dedicated to fostering environmentally friendly practices.
