On November 14, 2024, KyklOIKOdromio presented the Mayor of Strovolos, Stavros Stavrinidis, and Deputy Mayor of Strovolos, Stella Sourmelis, with the comprehensive evaluation of the educational activities carried out in the primary schools of Strovolos Municipality. These initiatives focused on the principles of circular economy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The educational activities on the principles of circular economy and the UN SDGs were conducted over a six-month period (January 2024-June 2024) and included:
The goal of the initiative was to inform students and teachers about the fundamental principles of circular economy (9Rs) and they relate to the UN SDGs, providing a solid foundation for critical thinking about consumerism, waste management and sustainable living. This initiative benefitted 630 students and 17 teachers in Strovolos Municipality.
Education is a key factor for change, as it can shape environmental awareness, provide the knowledge, but also the tools needed to adopt sustainable practices. Today's children are tomorrow's citizens, and education about the environment, sustainable development and the circular economy from an early age plays a key role in shaping environmental awareness. Through this process, the conscious adoption of sustainable practices is encouraged, helping to protect the environment, improve the quality of life and create a society that respects and cares for our planet.
KyklOIKOdromio hopes that this initiative will continue into the new school year.
The action was supported by Strovolos Municipality, Unit for Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development (Cyprus Pedagogical Institute), the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, and Primary Education Directorate.
